Complimentary Ladybug

Fantastic close up Laura!

lauramacky's avatarLaura Macky Photography

Last evening I went into our yard with my trusty new Macro lens.  Wow I’m loving it!   The coneflower I posted here shows a small ladybug of some sort  I’ve never been much of a bug person but I have to admit I went out in search of one on a plant yesterday.  I doubt I’ll be posting close ups of spiders (eeeek!!!) but I think I can handle a ladybug.  🙂

With this image I’d also like to mention for those who are new to photography that the colors here are complimentary colors.  Well most of them anyway, lol.  The green and the purple (or magenta) are opposite each other on the color wheel.  I find the opposites work best especially for very colorful, pleasing images.  I’m sure that a trained artist could tell you more about this but I’ve found it helpful to check out the color wheel…

Clouds ‘n Sunsets

Gorgeous work! Makes me feel like taking a deep breath…

lauramacky's avatarLaura Macky Photography

Last night I went on a mission to capture a sunset from our local mountain, Mt. Diablo.  We had some really beautiful clouds going on and that doesn’t happen a whole lot around here at this time of year.  As I was driving up the mountain, I just “knew” I was going to get some nice shots.  Well, let’s say that I knew the opportunity would present itself.  Whether or not these are good shots is always up to debate. 🙂

Sometimes I fumble with my equipment.  I couldn’t find my step-up ring for my Hoya filter so I improvised by using my polarizing filter so I wouldn’t get such a harsh glare from the sun.  I don’t know why I can’t seem to prepare myself a bit more before I leave the house.  But all in all, it was nice to get out from behind the macro for a…

Portuguese Squill, Up Close And Personal

Tiny vivid blue flowers with fluffy lemon yellow pollen adorn the Portuguese Squill plant, Scilla peruviana.

Alright, I admit it – I have an obsession with my macro lenses. What an amazing way to view the world! I love using them to spy on various unsuspecting bees and other insects, and I also spend a lot of time peering into the hidden depths of pollen-rich flowers and admiring delicately veined leaves and petals. Given that my love of photography blossomed out of a desire to document my gardening obsession, it’s only natural that my passion for my flowering friends remains a staple of my photography. The local nurseries are used to seeing me wander around their inventory, camera in hand. However, they don’t seem to mind too much, especially because I usually find a plant or two that I can’t resist bringing home to my tiny garden.

“I feel I cannot touch humanity, even in thought, it is abhorrent to me. But a work of art is an act of faith, as Michael Angelo says, and one goes on writing, to the unseen witnesses.” – D.H. Lawrence, 1885-1930, English, novelist, essayist, literary critic, painter, playwright

More on D.H. Lawrence

His collected works, among other things, represent an extended reflection upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. In them, some of the issues Lawrence explores are emotional health, vitality, spontaneity and instinct.

Lawrence’s opinions earned him many enemies and he endured official persecution, censorship, and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile which he called his “savage pilgrimage. At the time of his death, his public reputation was that of a pornographer who had wasted his considerable talents. Lightning Strike Just Outside of Lyons Colorado

Lightning Strike Just Outside of Lyons Colorado Art Prints

This Colorado lightning thunderstorm came in from the northwest over Rocky Mountain National Park and the town of Lyons heading southeast out to Longmont and down to Denver. We were positioned just out of the hard rain and watched it pass us by and stayed dry, my favorite place to be. This lightning bolt is striking just outside of Lyons Colorado, Boulder County with passing car light trails on highway 36 scenic view looking north.
