snow-leopard-1

The snow leopard (Panthera uncia syn. Uncia uncia) is a large cat native to the mountain ranges of Central and South Asia. It is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species because as of 2003, the size of the global population was estimated at 4,080-6,590 adults, of which fewer than 2,500 individuals may reproduce in the wild.

Snow leopards inhabit alpine and subalpine zones at elevations from 3,000 to 4,500 m (9,800 to 14,800 ft). In the northern range countries, they also occur at lower elevations. In other words, Snow leopards are found in 12 countries—including China, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, and Mongolia—but their population is dropping.

Taxonomically, the snow leopard was classified as Uncia uncia since the early 1930s.Based on genotyping studies, the cat is considered a member of the genus Panthera since 2008. Two subspecies have been attributed, but genetic differences between the two…

Yesterday me and the hubby went on a little field trip.  We found our way to the Florida Botanical Gardens in Pinellas County. Somehow in all of these years in Tampa, this gem has been hidden from me.  We frequently drive down to Sarasota to enjoy the Selby Gardend, but this place was also amazing!  So many flowers all out in the open to see and smell.  The winding paths lead to many beautiful surprises.  Plus there is a little heritage village with old houses and buildings that were to be destroyed, but were saved and moved here. What a treat!

It is a macro lens photographer’s delight. 🙂

Rainbow of Chaos

Arrive early to see the sun parting the clouds and an explosion of color makes its way into the very center of consciousness.

Enter the imagination later and you will encounter a vivid shade of energy that will allow a new understanding of life itself.

Come about in the end and the senses will treat themselves to a cornucopia of light and joy.

No matter when you arrive on the scene I am hoping that your experience will be one you will remember.

Namaste

When It Rains It Pours…

Not only have we been getting these little showers here in Florida, custom commission work has been pouring in as well. 🙂  As you can see below, I am still working hard on my fish for the big hotel project in Key West.  I am also creating special pieces for my collectors.  I spoke with a woman last night who lives in Hawaii.  She is commissioning a very sentimental piece to hang in her home that she shares with her partner. They are commemorating their lives together so far.  And my piece will signify their prayers that they would find each other before they met.  As always I am honored to be a part of so many people’s lives in such an intimate way.  And also grateful just to add beauty to the World.

Flowers & Fish (They’re Connected!)

sharoncummings's avatarAbstract Art by Sharon Cummings

I am still working on fish and flowers.  Ever since 5th grade Science class, we all learned that everything is connected in the ecosystem.  We also know that rain makes flowers grow.  But did you know that fish also make them thrive?

According to a study by University of Florida’s ecologist Robert Holt, fish are integral in the life cycle of flowers.  It all starts around the pond where bees pollinate nearby flowers.  Dragonflies prey on bees and you guessed it:  Fish eat the dragonflies.  So less fish means more dragonflies which means less bees.  Less bees equals less pollination.  Without pollination the flowers do not survive.

So, while fish don’t actually pollinate flowers, they have a strong indirect influence in this environment. This doesn’t mean that fish in general influence the flower population worldwide, but it does suggest that waterside plants in certain ecosystems could be affected by…

My Petals Are All W.E.T…..

sharoncummings's avatarAbstract Art by Sharon Cummings

Image

It’s that time of year when all of the flowers are blooming and these quick little showers show up out of nowhere. My orchids look fabulous this Spring!  I can mostly get phalaenopsis to re-bloom year after year. When I buy some from a store or garden shop, I let them live out their flowering lives in my home.  When they are all done, I just stick them under the oak trees and they love it!  I do not do anything else to them.  I just let nature water and care for them.  The white and hot pink especially like to show their pretty little petals for me.  We just had one of those morning showers that leaves everything all sparkly with water droplets….I couldn’t resist!
